5.12.3 Tuition Waiver for Persons Under Guardianship

Board of Trustees Procedure 5.12.2 authorizes the president to waive tuition for persons under the guardianship of the commissioner of Human Services. The student is required to submit a petition for consideration before the start of each term.

The presidents may waive tuition for the following:

  • Persons under the age of 21 who are under the guardianship of the commissioner of human services provided that those persons are qualified for admission to a Minnesota state college or university and that those persons contribute toward their expenses by gainful employment if they are able to work.
  • Persons under the age of 21 who have been removed from the guardianship of the commissioner of Human Services provided those persons were under the guardianship of the commissioner of Human Services when they reached the age of 18, are qualified for admission to a Minnesota state college or university, and contribute toward their expenses by gainful employment if they are able to work.
  • Persons who have attained the age of 21 and have made satisfactory progress in his/her academic program but have not completed the program may petition the college through their academic program advisor for continuation of the waiver until that program is completed. The academic program advisor will make a recommendation to the president.  (The decision to continue to waive tuition will be at the discretion of the president.)
