Course List

The challenges and rewards of medicine and science - the medical laboratory technician has the best of both worlds.

The medical laboratory technician performs general tests in all laboratory areas - blood banking, chemistry, hematology, immunology and microbiology. Working with the supervision of a medical technologist, a medical laboratory technician hunts for clues to the absence, presence, extent, and causes of diseases.

Medical laboratory technicians must be accurate, dedicated and skilled. They must also be self-motivated, and take the initiative to do what must be done everyday - to pitch in to help the healthcare team.

The MLT Program, requires two years (3 semesters and a 6-month externship) of full-time study. Upon completion of the academic and clinical requirements, the student will be awarded an Associate in Applied Science degree and become eligible to take a national certification board exam. The granting of the degree is not contingent upon the student's passing any type of external certification exam.

Students in the MLT program must have current vaccinations and undergo a criminal background check.

The mission of the Medical Laboratory Technician Program at Minnesota West Community & Technical College is to provide students with the appropriate education and training to develop entry-level competencies in all routine areas of the clinical laboratory and to prepare them to practice as ethical and competent professionals.
