Football Coach Jermaine Smith Named MCAC Coach of the Year After Transformative Season
Worthington, MN – Minnesota West Community and Technical College is thrilled to announce that Head Football Coach Jermaine Smith has been named the Minnesota College Athletic Conference (MCAC) Coach of the Year, recognizing his exceptional leadership in rebuilding the Bluejays football program into a symbol of growth, resilience, and integrity. Despite facing challenges that would have deterred many, Smith guided the team to an undefeated regular season before self-reporting an eligibility violation that required the forfeiture of six conference wins.
Under Coach Smith’s direction, the Bluejays rose to become the #2-ranked team in the nation, inspiring both his players and the campus community. His impactful coaching turnaround transformed a program that had been winless the previous season, igniting a new era of Bluejays football.
However, after discovering several players were ineligible, Minnesota West chose the difficult path of transparency, self-reporting the situation to the conference. The forfeitures altered the team’s record to 0-6 in the MCAC and 0-8 overall, but it showcased Smith’s commitment to integrity and his belief in fostering a program that stands for something beyond the scoreboard.
“I’m incredibly thankful for our dedicated coaching staff and, above all, the young men who have made coaching such a rewarding experience,” Smith shared. “No matter the challenges, it’s essential to keep fighting and persevering.” Reflecting on a season marked by growth and character, Smith’s statement exemplified his commitment to his players’ development on and off the field.
With over 20 years of coaching experience across collegiate and professional football, including roles in the NFL, CFL, and AFL, Smith brings invaluable expertise to Minnesota West. Beyond his football knowledge, his commitment to community service and youth mentorship through his non-profit for at-risk youth reflects his values-driven approach to leadership.
Smith acknowledged the support of his assistant coaches, who have been pivotal in navigating the season’s challenges. “This year has been remarkable; embarking on a journey to transform our culture has brought tremendous growth and excitement. I pray that God continues to guide this football program in His likeness. I feel truly blessed to be a Bluejay,” he said.
While the season record stands at 0-6 following the forfeitures, Smith’s leadership has left a lasting impact. His selection as MCAC Coach of the Year honors not only the Bluejays’ success on the field but also the culture of accountability, character, and community he has cultivated within the program.
The MCAC also recognized football student-athletes as members of the 2024 All-MCAC Team. These awards were selected by the head football coaches in the MCAC.
