September 5, 2023 – At a visit to the Worthington Campus last Tuesday, the Minnesota State chancellor expressed he’s “hopeful” that building projects across the state will receive funding dollars in the next Minnesota legislative session. Scott Olson officially began his role as Chancellor of Minnesota State on August 1. He replaced Devinder Malhotra, who had served as Chancellor since 2017 and announced his retirement.

The State of Minnesota has made a preliminary capital budget request that includes $200 million in Higher Education Asset Preservation and Replacement (HEAPR) funding and $330 million to fund a total of 16 colleges and universities across Minnesota in 2024.

Minnesota West President Terry Gaalswyk said, "The projects would be about a $9.6 million renovation that will improve spaces at the Worthington and Granite Falls campuses." The renovation will focus on updating outdated areas, creating a central hub for student support services, and providing flexible learning spaces.

The renovation project will specifically target the Student Services and Nursing areas, aiming to modernize them and create interactive, real-world learning environments.

Minnesota West is scheduled to host House and Senate Tours in October. These tours will offer an opportunity for presentations from Minnesota West and other local projects and their leaders to seek support.

Gaalswyk emphasized the importance of retaining talent in southwest Minnesota. Keeping college facilities up-to-date is seen as a crucial part of this effort.
